Conditional probability
Gives the probability that event A occurs given that event B is known to have occurred, as the probability that both occur divided by the probability of B. It is used whenever probabilities must be updated with partial information, provided P(B) is greater than zero.
P(A \mid B) = \frac{P(A \cap B)}{P(B)}What the symbols mean
| probability of event A given that event B has occurred | |
| probability that both events A and B occur | |
| probability that event B occurs, assumed nonzero |
