Probability mass function
The probability mass function gives the probability that a discrete random variable takes each particular value. It is the basic way to describe a discrete probability distribution.
f_X(x) = \Pr(X = x) = \Pr(\{s \in S : X(s) = x\})What the symbols mean
| probability mass function of the discrete random variable X, evaluated at x | |
| discrete random variable | |
| a possible value of X | |
| sample space of the underlying random experiment | |
| an outcome in the sample space S |
