Complex conjugate
The complex conjugate of a complex number z keeps its real part and flips the sign of its imaginary part. It is used in computing modulus squared, dividing complex numbers, and in many identities in algebra and physics.
\overline{z} = \operatorname{Re} z - \mathrm{i} \operatorname{Im} zWhat the symbols mean

| the complex conjugate of z | |
| the real part of z | |
| the imaginary part of z | |
| the imaginary unit, satisfying \mathrm{i}^2 = -1 |
