Newton's method iteration
This update rule gives a better approximation to a zero of a differentiable function f by following the tangent line at the current guess x_n down to the x-axis. It is used to find roots numerically when the function and its derivative are available.
x_{n+1} = x_{n} - \frac{f(x_{n})}{f'(x_{n})}What the symbols mean
| current approximation to the root | |
| next, improved approximation to the root | |
| value of the function at x_n | |
| derivative of the function at x_n |
