Derivative definition as a limit
Gives the derivative of a function f at x as the limit of the difference quotient as the step h approaches zero. It measures the instantaneous rate of change of f, or the slope of the tangent line to its graph at x.
f'(x) = \lim_{h \to 0} \frac{f(x + h) - f(x)}{h}What the symbols mean
| the function being differentiated | |
| the derivative of f at x | |
| the point at which the derivative is taken | |
| a small increment in x approaching zero |
