Characteristic polynomial
The characteristic polynomial of a square matrix A is the determinant of A minus lambda times the identity matrix. Its roots are exactly the eigenvalues of A, so it is used to find eigenvalues.
p(\lambda)=\det(A-\lambda I)What the symbols mean
| characteristic polynomial, a polynomial in the variable \lambda | |
| square matrix | |
| scalar variable, standing for an eigenvalue at the roots | |
| identity matrix of the same size as A |
