Electrical impedance
Impedance is the complex ratio of the voltage phasor to the current phasor in an AC circuit, generalising resistance to alternating current. Its real part is the resistance and its imaginary part is the reactance.
\underline{Z} = \underline{U} / \underline{I} = R + \mathrm{j} XWhat the symbols mean
| complex impedance (ohms, \Omega) | |
| voltage phasor (volts, V) | |
| electric current phasor (amperes, A) | |
| resistance to alternating current (ohms, \Omega) | |
| reactance (ohms, \Omega) | |
| imaginary unit, with \mathrm{j}^2 = -1 |
