Factor of safety
The factor of safety is the ratio of a component's capacity, such as its ultimate tensile strength, to the stress it actually experiences in service. It is used in engineering design to build in a margin against errors, overloads, and uncertainty in material properties.
n=\frac{S}{T}What the symbols mean
| factor of safety (dimensionless) | |
| ultimate tensile strength of the material (MPa or Pa) | |
| mechanical stress acting on the component (MPa or Pa) |
