Shear stress

Shear stress is the tangential force acting on an infinitesimal area divided by that area, giving the stress component lying in the plane of the cross section. It is used to analyse materials under sliding or twisting loads, such as in fluid viscosity and structural mechanics.

\tau = \frac{\mathrm{d}F_{\mathrm{t}}}{\mathrm{d}A}

What the symbols mean

shear stress (Pa)
tangential force acting on the area (N)
area over which the force acts (m^2)
