Ellipse equation in standard form
This gives the points (x, y) lying on an ellipse centered at the origin with its axes along the coordinate axes. It is used to write and analyze ellipses in analytic geometry.
\left(\frac{x}{a}\right)^2+\left(\frac{y}{b}\right)^2=1What the symbols mean
| horizontal coordinate of a point on the ellipse | |
| vertical coordinate of a point on the ellipse | |
| semi-axis length along the x-axis (horizontal semi-axis); this is the semi-major axis when a > b | |
| semi-axis length along the y-axis (vertical semi-axis); this is the semi-minor axis when a > b |
