Hyperbola equation (standard form)
The standard equation of a hyperbola centred at the origin with its transverse axis along the x-axis. The points on the curve are those where the difference of squared scaled coordinates equals one.
\frac{x^2}{a^2}-\frac{y^2}{b^2}=1What the symbols mean
| horizontal coordinate of a point on the hyperbola | |
| vertical coordinate of a point on the hyperbola | |
| semi-transverse axis length, distance from the centre to each vertex | |
| semi-conjugate axis length, controlling the asymptote slopes \pm b/a |
