Lorentz transformation
Gives the coordinates of an event in one inertial frame from its coordinates in another frame moving at constant velocity along the x axis. It is the basic transformation of special relativity and replaces the Galilean transformation at speeds comparable to the speed of light.
\begin{aligned}x' &= \gamma\left(x - vt\right) \\ t' &= \gamma\left(t - \frac{vx}{c^2}\right)\end{aligned}What the symbols mean
| position and time of the event in the frame S (m, s) | |
| position and time of the same event in the frame S' moving with speed v (m, s) | |
| relative speed of S' with respect to S along the x axis (m/s) | |
| speed of light in vacuum (m/s) | |
| Lorentz factor, 1/\sqrt{1 - v^2/c^2} (dimensionless) |
