Parallel plate capacitor capacitance
Gives the capacitance of an ideal capacitor made of two large flat parallel plates separated by a dielectric, neglecting edge effects. It is used to size capacitors from plate area, plate separation and the permittivity of the material between the plates.
C=\frac{\varepsilon_0 \varepsilon_r A}{d}What the symbols mean
| capacitance (farad, F) | |
| vacuum permittivity, about 8.854 \times 10^{-12} F/m | |
| relative permittivity (dielectric constant) of the material between the plates, dimensionless | |
| area of one plate (m^2) | |
| separation between the plates (m) |
