Stress–energy tensor
Defines the stress–energy tensor as the variation of the matter action with respect to the metric, giving the density and flux of energy and momentum in spacetime. It is used in general relativity to couple matter to gravity through the Einstein field equations.
T_{\mu\nu} = -\frac{2}{\sqrt{-g}}\frac{\delta S}{\delta g^{\mu\nu}}What the symbols mean
| stress–energy tensor components | |
| matter action | |
| inverse metric tensor components | |
| determinant of the metric tensor, \det g_{\mu\nu} |
