Eigenstate equation

An eigenstate of an operator A is a state that the operator only scales, so applying A returns the same state multiplied by the eigenvalue a. It is used to find measurable quantities and stationary states in quantum mechanics.

A\vert a \rangle = a\vert a \rangle

What the symbols mean

linear operator representing an observable
eigenstate (eigenket) of the operator A
eigenvalue associated with the eigenstate, the possible measured value
