Fermi's golden rule
Gives the transition rate from an initial energy eigenstate into a continuum of final states under a weak time-dependent perturbation. It is used in quantum mechanics to estimate decay and scattering rates.
\Gamma_{i\to f}=\frac{2\pi}{\hbar}\left|\langle f|H'|i\rangle\right|^{2}\rho(E_f)What the symbols mean
| transition rate from initial state i to final state f (per unit time, s^{-1}) | |
| reduced Planck constant (J\cdot s) | |
| matrix element of the perturbation Hamiltonian H' between final state f and initial state i (J) | |
| density of final states per unit energy at the final energy E_f (1/J) |
