Gravitational field strength of a point mass
Gives the gravitational field strength at distance r from the centre of a spherically symmetric mass M, which equals the gravitational acceleration experienced by a small test mass there. It is used for planets, stars and other spherical bodies outside their surfaces.
g=\frac{GM}{r^{2}}What the symbols mean
| gravitational field strength (acceleration due to gravity), in N/kg or m/s^2 | |
| gravitational constant, approximately 6.67\times10^{-11} N\,m^2\,kg^{-2} | |
| mass of the body producing the field, in kg | |
| distance from the centre of the mass, in m |
