Momentum operator
In quantum mechanics, the momentum operator acts on a wavefunction as the negative imaginary unit times the reduced Planck constant multiplied by the gradient. It is used to represent momentum observables in position space.
\hat{\mathbf{p}}=-i\hbar\nablaWhat the symbols mean
| momentum operator (vector), in units of kg·m/s | |
| imaginary unit | |
| reduced Planck constant, in J·s | |
| nabla (gradient) operator with respect to position |
