Redshift formula
Redshift z measures how much the wavelength of light from an astronomical object is stretched, as the fractional increase of the observed wavelength over its emitted reference wavelength. It is used to infer recession velocity and cosmic distance.
z = \frac{\Delta \lambda}{\lambda_0}What the symbols mean
| redshift, dimensionless | |
| increase in wavelength, observed minus emitted (\mathrm{m}) | |
| emitted or rest wavelength of the spectral line (\mathrm{m}) |
