Relative density
Gives the ratio of a substance's density to the density of water, a dimensionless number. It is used to compare how heavy a material is relative to water, for example in hydrometer measurements and material testing.
SG = \frac{\rho_{\text{sample}}}{\rho_{\mathrm{H_2O}}}What the symbols mean
| relative density (specific gravity), dimensionless | |
| density of the sample substance, in kg/m^3 | |
| density of water, in kg/m^3 (about 1000 kg/m^3 near 4 °C) |
