Van der Waals equation
An equation of state for real gases that extends the ideal gas law by adding a term for attractive forces between molecules and a term for the finite volume they occupy. It is used to estimate the pressure, volume, or temperature of a real gas, especially near condensation or at high pressure.
\left(p + \frac{a}{V_\mathrm{m}^2}\right)\left(V_\mathrm{m} - b\right) = RTWhat the symbols mean
| pressure (Pa) | |
| molar volume (m^3/mol) | |
| thermodynamic temperature (K) | |
| molar gas constant (J/(mol·K)) | |
| measure of attraction between gas molecules (Pa·m^6/mol^2) | |
| volume excluded per mole by the molecules (m^3/mol) |
