Young's modulus
Young's modulus gives the stiffness of an elastic solid as the ratio of normal stress to linear strain within the range where Hooke's law holds. It is used to predict how much a material stretches or compresses under a given load.
E = \frac{\sigma}{\varepsilon}What the symbols mean
| Young's modulus, stiffness of the material (Pa) | |
| normal stress, force per unit area (Pa) | |
| linear strain, dimensionless change in length |
