Chain rule in Leibniz notation
The derivative of a composite function y depending on u, which itself depends on x, equals the product of the derivative of y with respect to u and the derivative of u with respect to x. It is used to differentiate nested functions.
\frac{dy}{dx}=\frac{dy}{du}\cdot\frac{du}{dx}What the symbols mean
| dependent variable, a function of u | |
| intermediate variable, a function of x | |
| independent variable |
