Conservation of mechanical energy

In a system where only conservative forces act, the sum of kinetic and potential energy stays the same at every point of the motion. It is used to solve motion problems such as falling bodies, pendulums and roller coasters without tracking forces directly.

E_{\mathrm{mech}} = K + U = \text{constant}

What the symbols mean

total mechanical energy (J)
kinetic energy (J)
potential energy (J)
