Newton's law of universal gravitation
Gives the attractive force between two point masses as proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. It is used to compute gravitational attraction in classical mechanics, such as between planets or between a body and Earth.
F = G\frac{m_1 m_2}{r^2}What the symbols mean
| gravitational force between the two masses (N) | |
| Newtonian gravitational constant, approximately 6.674\times 10^{-11} \,\mathrm{N\,m^2\,kg^{-2}} | |
| first mass (kg) | |
| second mass (kg) | |
| distance between the centres of the two masses (m) |
