Lagrangian
The Lagrangian is the kinetic energy minus the potential energy, written as a function of generalized coordinates and velocities. The equations of motion of a mechanical system can be derived from it using the Euler-Lagrange equations.
L(q_i, \dot{q}_i) = T(q_i, \dot{q}_i) - V(q_i)What the symbols mean
| Lagrangian (energy units, e.g. \mathrm{J}) | |
| kinetic energy of the system (\mathrm{J}) | |
| potential energy of the system (\mathrm{J}) | |
| generalized coordinate i | |
| generalized velocity i, the time derivative of q_i |
