Newton's law of viscosity
Relates the shear stress in a Newtonian fluid to the velocity gradient across the flow, with dynamic viscosity as the constant of proportionality. It is used to define and calculate viscosity in fluid mechanics.
\tau = \mu \frac{du}{dy}What the symbols mean
| shear stress (force per unit area), in Pa | |
| dynamic viscosity, in Pa·s | |
| velocity gradient perpendicular to the flow direction, in s^{-1} |
