Reciprocal rule
Gives the derivative of the reciprocal of a differentiable function, equal to minus the derivative of the function divided by the square of the function. It is used when differentiating expressions of the form 1/f(x) wherever f(x) is nonzero.
\frac{\mathrm{d}}{\mathrm{d}x}\left(\frac{1}{f(x)}\right) = -\frac{f'(x)}{(f(x))^2}What the symbols mean
| a differentiable function of x, nonzero at the point considered | |
| the derivative of f with respect to x | |
| the independent variable |
